The Soviet Union emerged from World War II considerably stronger than it had been before the war. Although the
country suffered enormous devastation and lost more than twenty million lives, it had gained
considerable territory and now ranked as one of the two great world powers along with the United States. Nonetheless,
life in the country continued to suffer. Industrial production was once again concentrated on heavy industry, agricultural failures produced widespread famine, political freedoms were restricted even further, and another
huge wave of purges was carried out.
The standard of living Russian after war started to raise: have cancelled coupons, has opened more shops; the goods have
appeared on counters, but the level of service was very low.
Russian are fiercely and deliberately to each other in public.This is obvious toreigner, because foreigners are usualy given kind,
polite attention, often out of turn and ahead of any waiting Russians.If you ask Russians why they are so rude to each other,
the answeris an embarrassed shrug. Gentle, kind Russians can become ferocious combatants on the streets,trading insult
for insult with shopattendants, pushing and shoving with the bullies in lines and crowded subways.
